Hand-bound Daring-Do Replica by DaiKamonohashi Hand-bound Daring-Do Replica by DaiKamonohashi
"DPBRNWD-DO MND TRE GEISL SARPWIRE SFOIE!"

So this submission does two things. First, it makes it clear to my followers (if it weren't known before) that, yes, thanks to :iconkaijusamurai:'s influence, I've been a Brony for a little less than a year now. Secondly, it's my first post to dA showing off my newfound bookbinding skills! I've learned how to bind books in the past few months and it's been an AWESOME craft to mess around with. Incredibly tedious but super-rewarding because I'm making BOOKS and I LOVE BOOKS. AUGH. OH GOD I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. AFIDDVJKNFSGVOI:Naeklnd, etc.

Anyway, what we have here is a replica of "Daring-Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Stone," the book featured in the episode "Read it and Weep" (Season 2, Episode 16), that I bound by hand because I damn well could. And it was fun. The image I used for the cover was a lovely recreation of the in-show cover by :iconcptofthefriendship:, who graciously allowed me to utilize it for this project.

I will definitely be sharing more of my bookbinding projects in the near future as well!

Fantastically done. I'm doing my own hardback books, but they are actually stories. But what I love is the way you've made it and how thick it is. :) Sadly with the pacing and content of the actual episode of the adventure, I rapidly found that the book was incredibly short when written down . But then again, it IS a children's book. :)

I utterly love this and wish I had these skills. My advice is top seriously invest in doing these commission based, you could earn a lot. :) I'd certainly buy one. :)

I mean I'm down for accepting commissions but most people don't want to pay the $50 that makes it worth my while. XD

...you too, huh?

Seriously, my case of Bronitis(R) was contracted secondhand, c/o some of the utterly ridiculous fanartistry hereabouts. Since then, I've become far too familiar with cutesy-toon horse-critters, friendship rainbows & memes that will not die. You have my respect for channeling this condition into a tangible (and adorable) product, as opposed to several hours a night minimizing windows so the siblings don't catch on.

Say, incredibly stupid crossover idea: Rarity vs. Space Godzilla and/or Krystalak. To be specific, said duel's aftermath, wherein the former struts off with a massive stockpile of 'exotic mineral deposits' being levitated in her wake...whilst the latter, painfully shorn of dermal decorations, fills the background despite doing its best Traumatized Fetal Curl(TM).

Haha. :icongfan2332: forced me to sit through the animated movie from the 80s and about twenty minutes into it I realized, "Wow, I really, really hate the entire concept and execution of these things." Also, the movie itself made my ears bleed. Gyaos-style.

Yeah, I think that'd be pretty sweet. It's a small book, mind - it only measures about 4.75x6.25 - so it depends on how down you are with small sketchbooks. Personally, I love them. XD

Aww darn, well then off to google I go I guess.
What kind of material did you use when you bound this book though? It reminds me of the type of binding used by Everyman's Library

I have no idea what Everyman's Library is? XD

BUT if you're looking for this kind of binding in particular, it's called a "case-binding," so that should narrow your googling down a fair amount. I also do a lot of soft-spine hardcovers as well - I actually really enjoy those because they feel almost as solid while being a little less tedious. Look forward for a set of mane six-themed journals/mini-sketchbooks in that style!

As for materials, this particular book uses... here, let's make a list. XD

• 70lb. Drawing paper cut to the desired dimensions (this is from a pad of 9x12 paper that was cut in half and folded in half again to make 4.5x6 inch folios/signatures) and ALWAYS WITH THE GRAIN GOING IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION. You'll learn more about this in your googling - it's STUPID important.
• Cotton/Linen Suture thread - this is surgical thread that's actually thinner than the "bookbinder's thread" you can find at an art store but it's thicker than thread you'd use to sew fabric with. I prefer thinner threads for bookbinding because it lets me get these really flat, clean finished products. Other people don't mind the thicker spines a thicker thread gives you.
• Linen Tape - ...I don't care to explain this bit, just keep an eye out for it in whatever tutorials you come across. It helps hold the text block (the pages) together. XD
• Chip Board/Davey Board/Grey Board - You know that thick, smooth sort of cardboard on the back of a drawing pad? That's chip board. Davey board is basically just the more archival, acid-free (I.E.: WAY MORE EXPENSIVE) variation.
• Bookbinding cloth - It's cloth backed with rice paper. You can make this yourself too (glue cloth to rice paper - voila) but I loved this color I found for this book and also I am lazy.
• Bristol board - like the stuff you draw on when you ink something. This isn't necessary for all books, I just used it to make the frame for the image inset.
• Whatever glossy paper the cover image is printed on.
• Glue. SO MUCH GLUE. Most people will recommend PVA glue, which is wonderful stuff but you can easily (as I did here) get away with using regular, yellow wood glue instead. It's way cheaper.

Okay, so maybe that'll help a bit? It's not a super-difficult process once you've done it once or twice, it's just kind of complicated and tedious. XD

Wow thanks so much! This will get me off to a great start! Can't wait to see what other books you'll be binding.

Everyman's library is a publishing company that publishes fancy hardcover versions of literary classics. They're all of uniform height so when you line them up on a shelf it looks quite nice.

Ooooohhhh, you mean those awesome hardcovers I see at Barnes & Noble all the time? Those editions make me feel a stirring beneath my utility belt, not gonna lie.
