F*ck you, I'm Rodan! by DaiKamonohashi F*ck you, I'm Rodan! by DaiKamonohashi
I've been feeling apprehensive about inking some non-kaiju stuff that I really don't want to screw up so I pulled out an older piece I'd began to pencil but never really figured out where I wanted to take it and I used it as practice.

I call it, "F*ck you, I'm Rodan!"

This is simply my own idealized version of Rodan - combining aspects of the 56, 64, and 04 suits - placed into the context of the classic 1956 film. Though this is not a true VERSUS NEO piece, it IS the design I will be using for that series and I may not do a separate Rodan piece for it (Fire Rodan, on the other hand...).

The expression on that face... It just says, and I have no idea where I'm getting this from, "F*ck you, I'm Rodan!"

Gorgeous shading.

Great job! You have made Rodan look truly scary. This has only happened once before, and that was with the original Rodan, '56. Rodan and its mate looked more reptilian, more menacing  in that film than in any of the later films. Toho didn't seem to get Rodan's head right afterwards for some reason.

I actually adore the Rodan design from Ghidrah and it was a big inspiration for drawing this variation on the character. XD

I didn't particularly like the design that was used in Ghidrah and Invasion of the Astro-Monster/aka Monster Zero. For me, the problem was Rodan's face. I thought it looked a bit comical. But, as I say, I love your drawing. Great job! :)

I think Rodan is a great monster. He tended to be eclipsed by Godzilla, but I think Rodan is one tenacious fighter.

Very cool!  Love your new, but familiar take on Rodan.  The shading on the wings really makes him pop out- and only later do we see the immensity of the creature compared to the surroundings.  Great job!

You're the only one who draws Rodan's head right.  This is great.

Now that you mention it, original!Rodan did have a rather broad, almost lip-like beak layout. Reshaping that a bit does work here.

Be honest: do I come off as a colossal, or "merely" towering twit?

Solid, imposing design-fusion here. The O.G. head looks more than suitably sinister (seriously, what was with the Ghidrah suit's derp-eyes & chicken- beak?); the chest-armor is pleasantly rugged; and I'm truly digging those nice thick arms/wing fingers/digits. Unlike, say, the Heisei version, this Rodan looks built to handle a bit of toe-to-toe with any ground-pounding contender. Perhaps the cranial horns could use a bit of embellishment, but hey-gotta save something for Fire Rodan when/if that comes around.

Ah, and not that this hasn't been covered above, but your layout demonstrates a fine sense of perspective.

I actually really like the GtTHM version of Rodan. You may notice in the description that I was channeling that design a bit here - that is, I intentionally modified the width and shape of the beak to resemble the narrower bird beak of the '64 suit. It's subtle, because it's not as... beak-y but the thought process was definitely present.

Spoilers: VERSUS NEO Fire Rodan will almost the same as regular Rodan.

BUT ON FIRE.

I'd ask how Rodan comes by said cosmetic adjustment, but since that would clearly be telling, I should probably stop poking real artists before someone takes a brick to my typing digits. Best of luck with this & other projects.

Haha, thank you! This particular piece just started as a random sketch of Rodan in my sketchbook that I decided to flesh out into a finished piece through hours of tedious inking. I guess the hours of meticulous, tedious inking are my secret? XD

How do you make it so cleanly black and white?

This is one of the coolest pieces i've seen!! I can barely believe it.

The stark black and white is achieved by adjusting the curves setting in photoshop.

Great design, I like how you based his facial features off his original suit's design, probably his most intimidating look. Rodan needs more movies, Mothra got a spinoff trilogy & appeared in every other Millennium era Goji film, why not Rodan?

Because Rodan's never been as bankable a monster as Mothra, whether we like it or not.

Also, his face IS loosely based on the '56 suit but with modifications to incorporate features of the '64 (Ghidrah) suit.

Really nice. The people add such a nice touch. A dimension of aspect that really you do not see a whole lot in kaiju art (which is sad). Gives the old bird a real sense of power and size which unfortunately just has not been captured since the original film. In my own opinion.

I have in recent memory been aiming to capture that human element in my kaiju pieces - or if no people are present, I at least like to make the architecture and landscape that's being depicted into a major character itself. Either way, it's all about DETAIL!

And detail is not a department that you lack with that is for sure. So much hatching marks of varying lengths and thicknesses. Just really pulls the darks and shades into the picture; allowing for depth and shapes to really step forward. It's a great piece. Normally I would beg for color on anything, but this actually might work better with just the black and whites. It's great work as always that I see you put forth :)
